A Brief History of Operating Systems Essay Example for Free

A Brief History of Operating Systems Essay A History of Operating Systems To comprehend and to be set up for the eventual fate of PC bolster it assists with knowing the historical backdrop of working frameworks. The working framework is the product that connects the client to the computer’s equipment. Early centralized servers (the forerunner of the PC) didn't utilize a working framework. Projects were stacked onto the centralized server by paper punch cards, attractive or paper tape. The client would begin the program and trust that the program will finish, or crash. Investigating of the program was frequently done by modifying banks of switches. With each new centralized server dispatched, the activity and ease of use would change. There were no measures. As early working frameworks were created they were commonly just intended to work on that customer’s explicit unit. With the advancement of mass delivered microchips, PCs become progressively normal and increasingly moderate. With the quantity of PCs sold every year expanding there turned into a requirement for a normalized working framework. First and foremost there were numerous organizations battling to create a practical working framework for the general population. The two most conspicuous were Microsoft and Apple. Microsoft’s first passage in the working framework raid was MS-Dos or Windows 1. 0 out of 1985, an order line working framework that was not the least difficult to utilize however for its time was pretty easy to use. Obviously as processing power progressed so did Microsoft’s working frameworks. In 1987 Windows 2. 0, at that point in 1990 there was Windows 3. 0, the primary OS that had a work area and symbols to begin programs. Now Microsoft started to isolate their working frameworks into home client situated and business arranged. In 1993 Microsoft discharged Windows NT 3. 1, the main completely 32 piece working framework, it included better systems administration support and the NTFS record framework. NT advanced through 4. 1 then to Windows 2000. These working frameworks were designed for corporate clients and were marginally progressively hearty. On the home front in 1995 Windows 95 was presented and it was the main adaptation to have the taskbar and the beginning catch. The following rendition of the home OS was Windows 98, at that point 98SE followed by Windows ME. The following cycle of Windows was XP; this adaptation of Windows was one of a kind in a few different ways. XP was the primary OS to incorporate initiation, which connected the equipment in the pc where it was introduced to a one of a kind ID number. The other thing that made XP remarkable from past renditions of windows was that it came in a few forms from home use to corporate use. Windows Vista followed Windows XP yet was met with much investigation in light of its absence of help for heritage gadgets and programming and it’s dull execution. Windows 7 followed rapidly behind and tended to the greater part of these inadequacies. There are a few different decisions for working frameworks, albeit none have had the option to keep up a sizeable measure of the piece of the overall industry because of the similarity and ubiquity of the working frameworks offered by Microsoft. A portion of different contributions are Mac OS from Apple, UNIX, Linux (an open source OS dependent on Linux), Android and IOS just to give some examples. While a large portion of these don't offer the help and similarity that you would discover in working frameworks from Microsoft, they are rapidly making strides and acknowledgment being used from work area pc’s to handheld gadgets.

Anna Aiello Professor Jessica Lugo College Writing 1 25 September 2015 The Legalization of Gay Marriage A New York Times article honors that on June 26th, the United States declared same-sex marriage a right nationwide. â€Å"Love wins,† chanted the crowd outside the Supreme Court (Liptak). The Supporters of same-sex marriage celebrated the new feeling they received of love equality. For many years, homosexuals companions have been deprived from their right to become legally united. This decision will change the lives of homosexual people in future generations and it is an event that will be eternally appreciated by the people who are affected. â€Å"Marriage is a â€Å"keystone of our social order,† Justice Kennedy said (Liptak).† The†¦show more content†¦In a I believe that a vast majority of people have a future goal to get married and start a family with the person they love, and now this is possible for everyone. Besides, denying someone from their right to marry creates discrimination and deprives same-s ex couples and their families to equal social dignity. Same-sex couples can now enjoy the same marital benefits that heterosexual couples have gotten. So I am enlightened to be included in a society wherein acceptance has come a long way and will keep progressing over time. â€Å"As Justice Kennedy finished announcing his opinion from the bench, several lawyers seated in the bar section of the court’s gallery wiped away tears, while others grinned and exchanged embraces (Liptak).† This cheerful emotion spread nationwide from inside the courtroom to inside families’ home who have been advocacies of the gay right’s movement. Rainbows and beautiful quotes flooded all social media leaving me with a heart-warming feeling. One of the most memorable moments I had during this time was looking through the pictures. These picture expressed something that was more than just happiness and celebration there was also love and accomplishment in the people who had won th e fight. Whether they were young, old single or with a partner, these individuals celebrated and the love just poured out of the pictures. â€Å"Today,† Barack Obama said, â€Å"we can say, in no uncertain terms, that we have made our union a

It is a natural piece The Rain of Auvers can be found at the National Museum of Wales Analysis The colours used in the artwork are earthy tones with various browns, greens, yellows, blues and some†¦show more content†¦The colour used is important to the artwork because together they create a place of tranquillity meeting on coming havoc. The lines that are used do not outline individual objects in the painting but define the shapes of each. They show the direction that the artist took when painting this particular art piece. They are delicate and sensitive lines in the sense that they are not always visible but they still define the object. The painting has been painted to a deep 2D form. This form creates an illusion of a large amount of space. As if to create the illusion that you were looking out past the village towards the horizon. This was important so to capture the full effect of havoc reaching the harmony. The shape of the artwork is soft and flowing into each section. By using this format the artist has created a piece of volume and depth. Interpretation A peaceful village in a sense of harmony with an on coming storm, darkness and gloom. The black birds are flying out of the impending doom to shelter. My interpretation of what is happening is the village is peaceful sort of like the soul and then the storm comes and suddenly everything is in havoc. As if the painter had some form of inner turmoil when painting. The painter is trying to say that nothing is ever peaceful forever and eventually darkness will come. He was looking out over the village and saw the oncoming storm on the horizon and the black birds fleeing and it reflected his inner

Nuclear Chemistry free essay sample

In today’s society, nuclear chemistry is becoming more and more common and is being used in a variety of ways including for weapons and the medical field but the significance of this type of chemistry is its impact and what it has contributed to the world. Nuclear chemistry is the branch of chemistry concerned with nuclear reactions, radioactive substances and is the study of the chemical and physical properties of elements when influenced by changes in structure of the atomic nucleus. In modern times it is referred to as radiochemistry and has become interdisciplinary in its applications ranging from the study of the formation of the elements in the universe to the design of radioactive drugs for diagnostic medicine. Today chemical techniques pioneered by nuclear chemists are so essential that biologists, geologists and physicists use nuclear chemistry as ordinary tools of their discipline. The significance and what nuclear chemistry involves all plays a role on how it is significant to the entire world. Overall nuclear chemistry is an interesting type of chemistry used more and more often in modern times with mind blowing facts on its origins, positive and negative effects on the world and how it functions or is put to use in today’s society. First, like almost everything else in the world, there is an origin or history of nuclear chemistry on how it came about in this world and how it lead to what nuclear chemistry is known as today. Taken from the encyclopedia, commonly known as Wikipedia, is the origins of this fascinating type of chemistry. After the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Rontgen, a French chemist Henri Becquerel began to work on ionizing radiation and investigated the relationship between phosphorescence and the blackening of photographic plates. See the â€Å"Discovery of Radioactivity† article’s diagram below at end of paragraph. Becquerel discovered that, with no external source of energy (uranium that created rays which could blacken/fog the photographic plate) radioactivity was discovered. Polish scientist Marie Curie and her husband Pierre Curie isolated two new radioactive elements from uranium ore and isolated polonium and radium. In about 1901, the world began to notice that high doses of radiation could cause injury to humans when Henri Becquerel carried a sample of radium in his pocket and suffered a high localized dose and radiation burn. These injuries lead to the biological properties of radiation being investigated, which eventually resulted in the development of medical treatments. These beginnings of the study of nuclear chemistry are very unique and interesting but also hint at the positive and negative effects this type of chemistry would bring to the world. Furthermore, the background of this amazing type of chemistry briefly explains some of the positive effects nuclear chemistry has on the world but as it developed over the years, its importance to the environment and world became clear. Taken from the nonfiction book Radiochemistry and Nuclear Chemistry Third Edition, the authors explain how cancer is becoming more and more common, sadly, in the world and how the problems with over usage of radiation to treat cancer are being resolved on a molecular level. Also, the book explained how radiation damages the human body the human DNA but, on a molecular level, are finding ways to use molecular formulas to construct solutions as radiation protection as well as new drugs to take to stop the disease from spreading in the body (Choppin, Liljenzin, Rydberg 475, 478). See West, Jones and Price’s diagram (diagram of patient in a scanner). Relating back to the concept of chemistry here, the creation of using this molecular formulas to deal with the original radiation problem lead to the creation of better functioning X-Rays in hospitals which provides a safer usage of radiation and allows doctor to examine the insides of patients without doing any serious damage to them. Taken from an ACS website created by the Franklin Institute Science Museum, it goes in depth on the positive effects of nuclear chemistry on the world, specifically on the environment. Nuclear energy is the most environmentally efficient of all energy sources because it produces the most electricity in relation to its minimal environmental impact and there are no significant adverse effects to water, land, habitat, species, and air resources. Nuclear energy is an emission-free energy source because it does not burn anything to produce electricity and nuclear power plants produce no gases such as nitrogen oxide or sulfur dioxide that could threaten our atmosphere by causing ground-level ozone formation, smog, and acid rain (â€Å"Nuclear Energy† 1). See Westenhaus’s Nuclear Power plant diagram below at the end of the paragraph. The usage of nuclear chemistry through nuclear energy (ex. Nuclear power plants) in modern times has proven to have a minimal effect on the environment proving that Nuclear Chemistry is in fact beneficial to the world. Despite all of the great positive effects that nuclear chemistry has brought to the world through its existence, there are still quite a few negative effects it has on the world. On the other hand, Nuclear Chemistry may be an astonishing type of chemistry but there are still a few parts to it that bring negative effects to today’s society. In one of the AHS databases, Gale, was found an article that discusses how nuclear chemistry took a negative of affect in some drugs. Scientists at the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) have warned against the panic buying of potassium-iodide tablets as the crisis in Japan continues. Experts have also cautioned against scaremongering over the effects of the explosions at the Fukushima nuclear plant. One drug supplier said it has sold 250,000 pills to US citizens concerned about possible exposure from Japanese nuclear reactors (â€Å"NEWS: Drugs Panic Goes Nuclear† 1). The chemicals exposed in these drugs in the US from the Japanese nuclear reactors is a threat to the lives of thousands of US citizens and shows that the use of Nuclear Chemistry is interfering with prescription drugs which displays one of the negative effects of Nuclear Chemistry. Another and terrible downside to this type of chemistry is how nuclear chemists are being used in the world to make a large amount of deadly nuclear weapons capable of killing areas with large populations of people. For example, from another AHS database called Galileo, an article explaining about the climate effects on nuclear conflict assumes a scenario of a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan, each applying 50 warheads with an individual blasting power of 15 kt (Hiroshima size) against the major population centers, resulting in the emission of tiny soot particles, which are generated in the firestorms expected in the aftermath of the detonations. Also, in the stratosphere, the strong heating leads to an acceleration of catalytic ozone loss and, consequently, to enhancements of UV radiation at the ground (Stenke, Hoyle, Luo, Rozanov, Grobner, Maag, Bronnimann, Peter 1). See the Teller-Ulam Two-stage Thermonuclear Bomb articles diagram below at the end of the paragraph. Not only does this article prove that major conflict between countries in the world arises from the production of nuclear weapons, but it also prove how harmful it is to the stratosphere and the environment which is why the only way to stop this problem is to just get rid of and stop the production of these weapons. Overall, it is tragic that people have found a way to use this great of chemistry to put in drugs and weapons to hurt people and the environment but the list goes continues on how nuclear chemistry is used in the world today. Moreover, as today’s society continues to grow and find new discoveries in science, the nuclear chemistry or radiation of the world becomes more noticeable to people in their everyday lives. Taken from the Prentice Hall Chemistry Textbook in Chapter 25, Nuclear Chemistry, Section 4 it talked about common devices such as Geiger counters, scintillation counters and film badges used to detect radiation. A Geiger counter uses a gas filled metal tube to detect radiation and is capable of detecting alpha, beta and gamma radiation. The scintillation counter uses a phosphor-coated surface to detect radiation and is designed to detect all types of ionizing radiation. As for the film badge, it consists of several layers of photographic film covered with black lightproof paper, all encased in a plastic or metal holder and is an important radiation detector for persons who work near any radiation source. These different radiation detectors are essential in the world because they depict the different types of radiation that are visible to the human eye. Also, radiation has been found harmful to humans but through neutron activation analysis scientific procedure, nuclear chemists can detect trace amounts of elements in samples and are commonly used by museums to detect art forgeries and by crime laboratories to analyze gunpowder residues. See Glascock’s diagram below at end of paragraph. Radioisotopes are even used to diagnose medical problems and in some cases treat diseases (Wilbraham, Staley, Matta, Waterman 816-819). The use of radioisotopes and scientific procedures for safely using radiation have proven essential and beneficial to helping people in the medical field, detectives and so on. All of the different inventions or procedures used to detect or use radiation correctly have become useful to the citizens of the world which displays how nuclear chemistry has evolved overtime to be more commonly noticed and used in modern times. Lastly, after examining the abilities that nuclear chemistry can do through its usage in modern times, how it effects the world positively and negatively as well as the origins of it, it was easy to determine that the sky is only limit for this type of chemistry involving its effects it can have on the world. The early experiments of the first nuclear chemists started to research of radiation and radioactive elements in the world. Also, the use of nuclear energy at nuclear power plants have proven helpful to the environment in the world and serve as a positive effect that nuclear chemistry has on the world. On the other hand, the negative effects that nuclear chemistry has brought to the world is international conflict over nuclear weapons as well as deadly prescription drugs that being contaminated with the produce of nuclear power plants which have proven to be life threating. Another effect is how beneficial nuclear chemistry developments have been to the people of the world in various different ways. In conclusion, Nuclear Chemistry is an interesting type of chemistry that has proven to have a long lasting impact on society since its existence and will continue to do as it continues to progress.

Fly With The Eagles free essay sample

Ever since I was old enough to dream, I have imagined myself soaring with the eagles. My love of flying has sculpted the way I live, and the person I have become. Two years ago that passion rocketed to new heights when I had the opportunity to visit Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. For a whole week I lived in a college dorm, roomed with a total stranger, and best of all†¦ I flew! My group took part in activities ranging from learning about the history of aviation to flying in state-of-the-art pilot training simulators. At least once a day, I strapped into one of the world’s best training aircraft, the Cessna 182. Not only did I receive thorough ground instruction, but I also got to yes fly. In total, I logged five hours toward receiving my private pilot’s license. In that one joyous and oh-so-short week, my passion for aviation grew even more than I thought possible. We will write a custom essay sample on Fly With The Eagles or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Now whenever I see a plane fly over, I feel a sense of pride in the fact that â€Å" I’ve done that.† During my time in and above the Arizona desert, I learned not only about the mechanics and techniques of aviation, but also about myself, and about how I see the world. As I floated in that seemingly endless sea of air, I became aware of the variety and complexity of the humanity below me. On the ribbons of roadways, each tiny car carried people with hopes and dreams. I clearly remember thinking, â€Å"I wonder if any of these people has ever wished to fly like an eagle?† Then I realized that each must have his or her own dreams and aspirations. That’s what makes us each unique. We try to respond to something special inside us. I also realized that I was especially fortunate to be making my own dream come true. Everywhere I go, I hear, â€Å"Do what makes you happy in life, and you will be happy.† It sounds like the standard advice, but I’ ve really thought about it, and I’ve taken it to heart. I could care less about how much money I make, or what benefits I receive, or anything of that sort. I know that I am already in hot pursuit my dreams. And, even if they change, even if they don’t involve aviation anymore†¦I’ll always aim to fly with eagles.

Analysis of Work, Energy and Power Experiment Essays

Analysis of Work, Energy and Power Experiment Essays Analysis of Work, Energy and Power Experiment Essay Analysis of Work, Energy and Power Experiment Essay Analysis of Data In the first part of the experiment, we use a fan cart and first thing we do it to get the force of the fan cart by tying a string in the fan cart and hang a mass until the system is not moving that means that it is in equilibrium state. The tension in the string is equal so that the hanging mass multiplied by the gravitational pull of the earth which is 9. 8 ms2 is equal to the force exerted by the fan cart. Then we remove the string and turn on the fan cart and then let it move and record the time when it passes the certain distance in the track. We can say that the time that’s being recorded for the four trials is directly proportional to the distance or displacement that being covered by the cart, as the displacement increases the time also increases, and we can also say that the velocity is constant because the fan cart gives off a constant force. The result that we got for work in the four trials is increasing from the first trial to the last trial because we increases the distance it covers and the work is the product of the force and the distance covered by the object. And the power is the rate at which the work is done it is the work done per unit of time which is second. We got the values of power by dividing the work by the time we got in the smart timer reading. And in table 2, we measure the length of the string and the initial height which is the distance of the mass in the table which serve as our reference line. And the using the spring balance we lift the mass in different angles, in trial 1 we use 30Â °, second trial we use 60Â °, third trial 45Â ° and the fourth trial we use 90Â °. As we lift the mass we measure the distance of the mass from our reference line and the horizontal distance of it from its original position and also we record the reading of the force in the spring balance. From those values we compute for the work and the gravitational potential energy of that table. For the work done we use the formula w=mg L 1-cos? and for the gravitational potential energy we use the formula PEg=mg(hf-h0). We must derive the same result with the work done and the gravitational potential energy or close to that because L 1-cos? s equals to hf-h0. There are hundredths discrepancies on the result maybe because of our measurement in the height but we can say that it is also close to each other. Conclusion In this experiment I learn that the greater the displacement the greater the work done with a constant force acting on the system. And also I learn that the work done is equal to the gravitational potential energy. Work, power and energy vary directly to the displa cement or change in height. There is no work done, power and energy when there is no displacement occurs in the system. Energy is just changing from one form to another and it is neither be destroyed nor created. It is the ability of an object to do work and the rate of work with respect to time is called power. And work is just the product of the force and the displacement. The can be positive, negative and even zero depending on the angles between the force acting on it and the displacement done by the object. The gravitational potential energy is the energy stored within an object due to its height above the surface of the earth. To lift a certain object upward, the work must be done against the downward pull of the earth. And it also varies directly to the weight of an object that being lifted, the heavier the object is the higher work or energy is needed to lift it upward. One of the best examples of work, energy and power is when you are walking at a certain displacement, even you are just walking you’re already doing work the force is your weight and multiplied it to the displacement you covered from walking you already compute the work you’ve done and the power is basically the work over the time you covered from walking, the power is the rate of the work you’ve done and the energy is capacity for doing that work which is walking.

Journal Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 5

Journal - Coursework Example The difference presented by this methodology compared with other teaching styles is that topics for study are selected because they are of interest to the children and their lives. These interests are supposed to exhibit meaningful relevance to the greater benefit of children’s lives. In this education curriculum, children go to great depths and higher levels in which teachers integrate content knowledge like reading, science and mathematics into these projects. This paper aims to highlight emergent curriculum by discussing topics that appear to interest children in a given class. In emergent curriculum formulation and implementation, development appropriate projects (DAP) should always be a primary consideration when planning to embark on designing a project. This ensures that the intended activity meets the overall objectives set out by the institution of learning and addresses the children’s immediate goals of learning through their experiences in the project (Carter & Curtis 203) DAP is achieved by ensuring that the intended project does not require too little or too much of the children in that it negates their efforts in attaining knowledge from the activity. In this case, similarity or monotony presented by indoor play areas can seem to be depressing or discouraging to teachers a scenario, I was able to find myself in during my time with the children. I came to notice that the children under my care did not get bored for being in the same play environment every day; the children illustrated progressive advancement in their daily activities in th e same setting. As a teacher, I am supposed to apply my knowledge on theoretical influences behind this observation made on the children in this static environment (Carter & Curtis 92). As outlined by Carter & Curtis, As a teacher and caregiver, I am supposed to claim my power as a principle to focus my attention on

Effetive communication in radiotherapy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Effetive communication in radiotherapy - Essay Example These are expressing of concerns, checks and understanding, asking of questions and presentation of detailed information (Wilmet, 2007). For all these components to be achieved, the patient needs to put in extra effort and to fully cooperate. The quality of the communication provided in cancer care improves when the radiotherapists tend to the individual cancer patient needs. Patients can clearly contribute to this individualized care by expressing their preferences as well as needs clearly (Webster, 2000). Effective communication in the radiotherapy setting enables the collating of information hence making audit virtually possible and enhancing onward flow of data to cancer registries. It helps the radiotherapy staff to uphold teamwork. This will enhance a detailed discussion between physicians, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and oncologists about the clinical factors that are relevant to decision making. This will therefore benefit patients in the treatment of radiotherapy due to their high considerations. The manner in which health care professionals do communicate with patients through the application of health and social care services highly affects the way in which the patients do experience the treatment. Good communication facilitates earlier diagnosis of cancer ailments. Early diagnosis can lead to better and efficient treatment of the cancer in the patient. This will ultimately help to avoid deaths that are usually occasioned by late diagnosis of the cancer ailment in p atients. It reduces emergency admissions of cancer patients. It also improves self-management of radiotherapists on the patient. Effective communication is also important in reducing inequalities in access and provision of care among the cancer patients (Royal College of Radiologists, 2008). It enables the patients to return to their normal life activities as soon as possible after the diagnosis of the treatment of cancer. It also encourages patients and radiotherapists to

Climate Change And Effects On Hospitality Industry Environmental Sciences Essay

Climate Change And Effects On Hospitality Industry Environmental Sciences Essay This report overall discuss about the global climate change or global warming and its serious impacts on the whole world. In detail it discusses about how global warming is caused, what is the main epidemic for the climate change, its direct effects on the hospitality industry. Further it tells about the latest IPCC report which tells how deep is everyone in water and discusses about the future projected changes. Later this report discuss about the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme proposed by Australian Government where it briefly tells about what is CPRS and its impacts specially on Australian tourism industry. This report also analysed one of the worlds leading 5 star properties in terms of how eco friendly is that property. In the end of the report it discuss about the recent conference held in Copenhagen regarding the global climate change and the new laws and issues that were raised by keeping tourism in focus. Climate change had begun a long time ago, but it knocked the unconsciousness of human mind a bit late when theses changes were at their peak. In other words people actually started to pay serious attention to these changes when they heard from the mouth of scientists, when they saw on T.V. that the meetings were been held all around the world and saw the consequences with their own naked eyes and believed that this is not a joke but is a matter of serious consideration. The change in climate started to occur more than 2 decades ago. Now the question that arises over here is who is responsible for all this and how to cope up with the situation like this? Further this report will discuss about the factors due to which the planet earth is facing devastating changes in its environment, its impact on the innocent people and also on the Australian hospitality industry. Global Warming and its impacts on the whole world This report basically discusses about the changes that are taking place in the earths environment. The term environment refers to features that lie outside the system under consideration and separated from the system by a boundary. The boundary acts as a control on the flows that take place from the system into the environment. This flow could be of anything, it could be the flow of money, pollution or information. But our major concern in this report is the flow of earths ecological system. Now the boundary of our ecological system has become totally semi permeable which was permeable before. Semi Permeable boundary simply means that the boundary is getting thick day by day that it is preventing all the green house gasses such as methane, nitrogen etc. and other invisible radiation to escape, which in turn increasing the temperature of earth constantly resulting in Global Warming. The term global warming is defined as a system of multipliers devised to enable warming effects of di fferent gases to be compared. Global warming is not just about warming of the planet, its also about the imbalance which gets created in the environment. For example over the past few years some irrelevant changes have been seen in few countries such as the place which is supposed to get good amount of rain faced severe drought and on the other hand the places which were meant to be dried got heavily flooded. From the latest research it has been found that the amount of carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere has crossed 300ppm which had never happened in 650,000 years. The limit has gone above more than 382ppm where 450ppm being the dangerous sign. The reason is fairly simple i.e. increased pollution in the earths ecological system which in turn has increased the green house effect as well and the increased human activities. Green house gases consists gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and CFCs. One thing to be noticed over here is that the major contributor of gree n house gases is carbon and as discussed above the annual carbon emission has grew above 80%. Because of the green house effect the icebergs down in arctic are melting and rising the sea level all around the world, due to which the oceans are getting hotter and hotter by absorbing the huge amount of carbon radiation resulting into hurricanes, typhoons and tornados. The increase in the emission of GHGs is because of increasing human activities day by day. These activities involve the burning of fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal etc. that are limited in quantity and non renewable sources of energy. This means the more the, people more the burning of fossil fuels and more the pollution will be created. Human influences have very likely contributed to rise in sea level, likely contributed changes in the wind patterns leading to storms, typhoons, hurricanes etc. Not only human beings contribute to global warming, animals also contribute such as cows, sheeps etc. They release methane g as which when comes out becomes more poisonous because of the way their digestive system is created. According to recent IPCC report (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) the annual Arctic sea ice extent has shrunk from 2.7% to 8% per decade since 1978, which is an increase of 5.3% resulting in declination of snow and glaciers in both hemispheres. There is a medium confidence that the continuous change in climate is also affecting the agriculture at northern hemisphere such as early spring planting of crops and alternations in disturbance regimes of forests because of inability to adapt changes. As the earth is getting hotter and hotter the amount of water present on the earth is decreasing because of evaporation. Mount Everest which is the source of water for many countries such as India, Nepal, China etc. is losing the ice continuously which is not a good sign. Everything has some negative effects and some positive effects which can be proven by the simple example of melting of ice, good effect is that some countries get water to drink whereas the bad effect is that it also leads to rise in sea level. This is not only affecting human beings its also affecting the natural habitat. Due to global warming the bird babies and other babies are getting born immature and weak and also prior to their actual birth timings. This pollution has also decreased the protective layer which protects from mosquitoes and lots of other deadly infections, the major protective layer is the ozone layer. The depletion in the ozone layer has increased the chances of skin cancer. The movie Six Degrees tells that how does earth changes its form even if the overall temperature of earth just increases by 1 degree centigrade. The increase of 1 degree can result into bushfires that is one of the common things for Australia. Six degrees is the last stage and beyond that earth will no longer exist Future climate changes and its impacts As per the IPCC Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES) in the next 20 years there will be 70% increase in global GHGs with no fossil fuels left. Furthermore there is projected warming of 0.5 degrees centigrade for next two decades even if all the GHGs are kept under control, a further warming of 0.2 degrees centigrade is expected. In the regional areas snow contraction and increase in thaw depth is likely to occur. Increase in frequency of hot extremes, tropical cyclones and increase in precipitation in high latitudes are some of the expected changes. Some of the systems and sectors that are very likely to be affected by the climate change would be terrestrial areas such as tundra, mediterranean type of ecosystems because of reduction in rainfall, coastal and marine areas due to multiple stresses, population living in low latitudes. The most vulnerable part of the world which will be affected would be Asia and Africa because of large population and high exposure to sea level ri se. Effects on Hospitality Industry The hospitality industry is an international industry emerging worldwide. This industry is extremely important for the economy. Climate change can now be seen as a fundamental issue with major influences on tourism. Hospitality industry does not cause any kind of environmental pollution nor does it consume large amounts of non renewable sources and therefore this industry is not in the front line of environmental concern. This industry is made up of vast majority of small operations which intakes minute amounts of energy, water, food, paper etc. but it does add small amount of pollution to the environment in terms of noise, smoke, chemical pollutants. The hotel industry damages the environment by releasing some carbon emissions and CFCs that comes out of the air conditioners and refrigerators, by wasting energy, food, water. These are some of the ways by which the hospitality industry ruins the environment a bit. Now because of this pollution the hospitality industry has also been a ffected. The hotels that rely on the nature itself for example snow, mountains, lakes or oceans etc. will no longer exist because as the temperature is increasing there will be no ice, sea etc. Climate change has a large potential to totally destroy the hospitality and tourism industry. Climate change will heavily have its impact on this industry by changing the destination patterns and by changing the decisions of the industry. Since tourism industry totally depends on natural environment certain types of tourism will get affected such as winter sports, lake and sea, mountain, fishing etc. The coral reef that are present under water have started to dry out, the sea animals have started to die and this will eventually result into less number of tourist which means less profit and less profit is equal to deep loss for the hotel. The reason is people actually want to see natural beauty, they dont to see just the empty ocean. If the local environment near the hotel will not be clean no one will go to that hotel. If a hotel is situated at a location where due to climate change that place is getting heavy rains that place could end up in flood, because of which the tourist would feel unsafe to go there even if the hotel is offering good incentives. Overall it has been seen that the industry is very much vulnerable to bad news or events, this is the only industry which contributes the maximum amount to the countrys GDP. Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Australia is a hot and dry country and has started to face the impacts at a very high speed. In last 12 years the country has experienced 11 hottest years and it is expected that by the end of this century the temperature will rise by 5 degrees, as a result the national treasures including Great Barrier Reef, Kakadu etc. that support the industry will be in danger. Carbon pollution reduction scheme will led industries to pay for the pollution they create from the carbon in other words putting tax on the usage of carbon and this will set a limit on Australias contribution to carbon pollution. This scheme is a cap and trade emissions model created to decline Australias emissions of green house gases. This scheme covers emissions from transport, industrial wastes, overall this scheme will cover 75% of Australias green house gases. This schemes main objective is to reduce green house emissions by between 5 and 15% below 2000 levels by the year 2020 and 60% from 2000 levels by the year 20 50 If all the industries in the country follow this scheme there will be a reduction of 15% for sure. This scheme is the lowest cost way to protect the interests of business and households, it will also motivate the major polluting industries to move towards the cleaner future. The CPRS affects the tourism industry in very much economical way. Tourism industry accounts a total of 3.7% of total GDP and it contributes around 10.5% of total exports of goods and services because of international relations. With the CPRS the real GDP will fall because the emissions price under this scheme act as a tax which as a result will reduce the economic efficiency and the tourism industry will slightly experience a contraction with the general shrinkage of the economy as whole. Moreover this scheme will push up the costs for tourism industry which could make Australia more expensive destination. As the Australian tourism industry is vulnerable to climate change it will influence all the natural assets on which the industry depends and the rise in price of travel and tourism caused by CPRS will further decline the tourist demand. Within this industry aviation is the one which will face a larger consequence from the CPRS as aviation is the core part of Australian tourism industry. The CPRS is going to increase the emission because of the increasing fuel prices. Furthermore the CPRS is expected to affect particularly leisure and regional routes which in turn limits the airlines to pass through cost of carbon. The CPRS will increase the potential for the substitution by increasing the price of domestic aviation. Therefore giving a negative impact on domestic tourism and providing incentives for outbound travel making Australia an importer of tourism and eventually resulting in high risk of carbon leakage. The CPRS will reduce real disposable incomes which will then reduce the do mestic tourism within Australia. Environmental analysis Sheraton Mirage in Port Douglas is one of the finest 5 star properties. This property is a resort type of property with natural beauty all around. This property is very serious in regards to environment. According to the primary research this hotel recycles the oil instead of draining it away, which could result into sea pollution. They simply recycle it every time and use it for future purposes. They use CFC free chemicals used to clean toilets, glasses and all. They also use solar energy throughout the hotel which helps them to save a lot of electricity. Since it is a golf resort they actually use electric golf carts instead of using the one which runs with petrol or diesel. From the secondary research it has been found that the water which gets waste, they recycle it and use it for watering the areas such as golf course. They offer guests to use bath towels in order to reduce the detergent amount. Electricity is also reduced by using the CFL bulbs and lights and guests are asked to turn off their lights when not in use. This hotel practise waste minimisation and separate glass, paper and plastic for recycling. Sheraton Mirage has a large swimming pool where it uses the sea water that directly comes there. Copenhagen Conference Recently there had been a conference in Copenhagen in Denmark regarding the global climate change in which all the countries around the world took part. In the conference a lot of suggestion were been given such as if petroleum based economy is converted into sun based economy. This will enable human kind by combining intellect and technology to enable advance human activities. A lot of issues were raised in relation to transport as it emits 870 million tonnes of carbon each year. The UNFCC decided to take necessary actions in two ways, one is by including emissions in national totals and taking it as a purely accounting measure and the other is by setting the target for the two sectors and mandating IMO and ICAO to agree on global sector policies within a limited timeframe. The shipping industry could rise their annual allowances by $ 25 billion. Conclusion The conclusion of this report that comes out is that the whole world is in danger as the global warming is at its peak point. But this is not the end of the world, it can still be controlled if everyone starts to think over it. This is not a joke, its the time to get serious. If the people will take serious action over it such as by adapting new policies which will then help them to cope up with the climate changes. The only recommendation that could be made at this point is that people should start measuring the amount of carbon they use and by recycling the stuff rather than to throw away and by saving the resources as much as they could.

What Drives History? :: European Europe History

What Drives History? "History is the Essence of Innumerable Biographies" -Thomas Carlyle What drives history? Before we answer this question, we must go deeper and answer a more important question: What is history? History is, simply, all of the events, ideas, people, and occurrences that have existed in the past. These things have been driven by one common factor: individuals. Although individuals driving history may seem like a rather simple answer, it is the only one that provides no flaws. One such individual who has driven history is Martin Luther. Luther, a German monk, was an inspirational figure who struggled to encourage people to think more for themselves. Martin Luther had an unconventional way of viewing the Church at the time. Luther believed that it was wrong for the Church to sell indulgences or "forgiveness from god." Martin Luther thought that salvation could only be achieved through performing good deeds. During Luther's protesting, he created the "95 Theses," which were a list of arguments and problems against the Catholic Church. Martin Luther was a very strong leader, and through his teachings, many people began to follow him and share their beliefs. Eventually, this lead to the Reformation of the Roman Catholic Church, and caused a sect to break off, known as the Protestants. This drastic change lead to an immense conflict between both groups which eventually caused the ostracism of the Protestant sect to the Americas. This relocation created many tho ughts that influenced the rest of the world. Martin Luther's ideas and teachings not only drove history in the past, but they continue to drive the present day. Another important individual who drove history was the Italian astronomer and scientist Galileo Galilei. Galileo discovered something so important that it changed the selfish perspective that humans were the center of the universe and led to the growth of human knowledge. Utilizing mathematics and a telescope he had developed, Galileo observed that the planets revolved around the sun and not the Earth. This was a significant discovery because not only did it contradict what the church had taught, it also showed that the universe was not what it seemed. With this truth uncovered, many people began to fascinate over the universe. This triggered people to begin studying space extensively and eventually lead to present day space exploration. Galileo also left a lasting impression upon many great minds, such as Sir Isaac Newton, who used Galileo's research and theories to further his own studies such as the physical laws, and their properties.

How Does Mcewan Depict the Breakdown in Joe and Clarissa’s?

How does McEwan depict the breakdown in Joe and Clarissa’s relationship in the middle section of the novel? McEwan initially portrays Clarissa and Joe as the ideal couple, capturing the seemingly stable love affair between two academics. However, McEwan seeks to explore the disintegration of the ‘superior’ middle-class romance, to emphasise how nothing is safe. To the unknowing reader, everything about the relationship is calm and admirable. Yet difficulties begin to surface early in the novel. The reader learns how Clarissa is unable to bear children; something which the reader can see is hidden from daily life, but obviously has a profound effect on the relationship. To add to this, Joe is unhappy about his status in the scientific community. He feels his work as a lecturer is not enough, and this causes his self-worth to diminish over time. Joe longs for a perfect life, with a perfect career and for his interests to be satisfied. Everything down to the expensive wine at the picnic suggests Joe seeks perfection.Similarly, Clarissa also seeks perfection but instead, strives for the ideal romance, idealised by her literary idol, John Keats. McEwan focuses on a breakdown of communication throughout the middle section of the novel. Any conversations between the couple are brief and rushed, without consideration for the other’s words. Chapter 9 is significant for the development of Joe and Clarissa’s relationships collapse as the reader is invited to witness the events from Clarissa’s perspective.Through McEwan’s technique, the reader can view the hardships of Clarissa’s day, to recognise the daily stresses of her personal and professional life. We see Clarissa’s confusion at Joe’s apparent manic state, the communication issues, ‘All this talking and listening that’s supposed to be good for couples’. Joe simply cannot leave Clarissa alone; he is dependent on her for mental supp ort and he fails to recognise when she needs time to herself.Throughout Chapter 9, we learn that Joe is trusting Clarissa and coming on rather strongly, ‘but his intensity is inhibiting her’. However, it is at this point where we recognise that Clarissa is being told the whole story, despite claims later in the novel that she isn’t, she simply doesn’t take the correct amount of interest. The three obvious milestones of the breakdown are the balloon incident, Jed Parry’s intervention and Joe’s evident depression. Parry appears as the main catalyst, as he highlights the couple’s flaws.Trust is a huge issue between Joe and Clarissa, as made obvious when Joe fails to tell Clarissa of Parry’s late night phone call, ‘I know I made my first serious mistake when I turned on my side and I said to her â€Å"It was nothing. Wrong number. †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ His actions could suggest he simply didn’t want to worry Clarissa at such a time, but also could ring early alarm bells for problems of trust. Trust issues are also evident when Joe raids Clarissa’s study, frantically searching for evidence of an affair. Shortly after this, they begin to sleep in separate beds, ceasing the late night discussions and passionate love-making.

`` Lights On At The End Of The Party Are Lads And Rapists

Within â€Å"â€Å"Lights on at the End of the Party†: Are Lads’ Mags Mainstreaming Dangerous Sexism?† article written by Miranda A.H. Horvath, Peter Hegarty, Suzannah Tyler, and Sophie Mansfield, the researchers explore the possible implications and similarities of â€Å"lads’ mags† and rapists. Within the first study, men are sampled to see how they identify with quotes from both sources and if the difference in source affects the result. In the second study, a group of men and women are asked to distinguish between quotes from the magazines and rapists, as well as rank them on how derogatory they were. The results from each study reveal shocking truths in society, and raises important questions. The main problem being, these magazines are normalizing hostile sexism. â€Å"Lads’ mags† can be found in the magazine racks and are similar to magazines such as GQ and Esquire, but aimed at a younger audience. They pander to young adult men by offering advice on women, and relationships, as well as feature â€Å"humorous† articles. However, the advice on women is crude and the pictures found in the pages of such magazines offer risquà © imagery on women. When the editors of such magazines are confronted about the attitude displayed towards women, they claim it’s all in good fun and â€Å"obviously† ironic. Unfortunately, these magazines are considered reputable learning sources for young adult men, but what they print isn’t far from what a particular un-reputable source says: rapists. Rapists also attempt to

Anthropogenic Pollution And Around Bamfield British...

Anthropogenic Pollution Bioindicators in and Around Bamfield British-Columbia Introduction Dating back hundreds and hundreds of years ago, the act of dumping into waters has been practiced without any thought into the possible damages this could inflict on the ecology of the marine life present. The dumping of garbage and sewage in these waters is detrimental to the species that inhabit it, it can destroy their habitat, and it can destroy themselves as organisms (Chenery AM. et al. 2005). Since these organisms are usually fully submerged in these waters, there is nothing protecting them from being surrounded by polluted waters that could potentially harm them. For the past couple of decades though, and in many areas of the world, people have begun to notice and understand these problems and have begun setting out laws and required permits to do anything remotely close to dumping in waters (Chenery AM. et al. 2005). However, this is only but a single step in a process working towards cleaning and keeping both oceans, and in-land bodies of water, including their organisms, safe from human waste. With the vast diversity of pollutants being introduced to these waters, it is becoming more and more difficult to analyze and identify the exact effects each pollutant has on the water quality as well as the organisms living in them (Howe and Clark, 2014). Scientists, though, have discovered new ways of identifying these negative effects the pollutants have by analyzing certain

Comparing Rosemarie Seus And John Steinbeck s Of Mice And...

Rosemarie Seus John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck On Feb. 27, 1902, in Salinas, California, John Ernst Steinbeck Jr was born. His father, John Ernst Steinbeck worked several jobs, while his mother, Olive Hamilton Steinbeck was a former schoolteacher. Steinbeck had a mostly happy childhood – he grew up with three sisters, was smart, and formed an early appreciation for the land. Steinbeck decided to become a writer at the age of 14, writing many poems and stories. He enrolled in Stanford University in 1919, but dropped out in 1925 without a degree. In 1929, Steinbeck wrote his first novel, Cup of Gold, and married his first wife, Carol Henning. His follow up novels received unenthusiastic reviews. It was not until 1935, when he†¦show more content†¦Some examples of literary modernist writers include James Joyce, Robert Frost, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein. Realism Literary Movement In literature, the Realism Movement occurred in Europe and America in the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, before Modernism. Realism is described as a style and a type of writing where writers wanted to portray life as it really was – real lives, real jobs, and real problems. This type of writing was a reaction to and a rejection of Romanticism, which was a style of writing that focused on optimism. The importance of character and class, plausible events, and renders reality closely are some characteristics of Realism. Some examples of Realism writers include Mark Twain, Henry James, and John W. DeForest. American Novel The American Novel is the concept of writing being an accurate representation of time in the U.S. It is presumed that the writing is written by an American author who knows the state, culture, and perspective of an American citizen. The authors use literary work to identify language and to capture the unique experience of American people at the time. 19th century authors include Mark Twain (Huckleberry Finn). 20th century writers include John Steinbeck (The Grapes of Wrath) and Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird). The Great Depression The Great Depression was the deepest and longest economic downturn in the history of the western world. The depression started in the U.S. soon

When the Contract Is Short on Express Terms free essay sample

When the Contract Is Short on Express Terms, It Can Be Viewed as a Repository of Implied Rights to What Extent Do You Agree with This Statement By godapola64 The Difference between expressed implied term in a Contract of employment Expressed terms of a contract of employment can be terms specifically agreed between the parties, which can be either verbally or in writing in a contractual document (ex: basic salary, working hours, holidays, type of work, part-time or fulltime). Expressed mean that they were specifically stated either orally, maybe in an interview or in writing. According to Price (2009) an implied term is one which a court will recognize in order to flesh out the responsibilities of parties under a contract when they have not made an express agreement on a topic in a disagreement and also states that a term is simply implied by law when a Judge considers that the term ought to be implied into a particular category of contract (ex: employer/employee) and also these terms are fairly obvious to both parties to the contract of employment and some of the implied terms include statutory rights, such as the right to equal pay, duties such as duty of are and also health and safety. We will write a custom essay sample on When the Contract Is Short on Express Terms or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In a nut shell implied term are pre written. The Practical importance of implied terms Implied terms are very important because in most employment contracts employer is required to issue a written statement which outlines all the main terms and conditions of the employment. Because of the broad and extensive nature of the employment relationship it is close to impossible to capture all the intensions and the necessitates of both parties so the in addition to the expressed terms, the employment contract is also governed by implied terms and the ways to assign mplied terms into the contract of employment which can be by fact, by law and by custom (Price 2009). General test for implied terms The general test for implied terms decides when a term will be implied into a contract and there are a set of conditions that has to be satisfied in order for the term to be implied. The conditions are the term must be reasonable equitable; it must be necessary to give business efficacy to the contract, so that no terms will be implies if the contract if effective without it; it must be so obvious that it goes without saying; it must be capable of clear expression and it must not contradict any This test was proposed by the Privvy Council in the case BP Refinery (Western Port) v Shire of Hastings (1997) 180 CLR 266 and it is the main criteria of reference used when determining implies rights. The case was on a rating agreement where the BP leased land in Hastings to build and oil refinery and the shire of Hastings agrees to keep the rates low but after BP Westernport became BP Australia the Shire decided to increase the rates and BP won the case because it is an implied right to give business efficacy to a contract and it is inequitable and far from obvious. Necessity is very important when deciding if a term is implied by law and a court shouldnt imply a law to make the contract reasonable, or fair or prudent and The necessary foundation for the creation of contractual right and obligation is the agreement of parties : Codelfa Construction Pty Ltd v State Rail Authority (NSW) (1982) 149 CLR 337,401. In the above stated case Codelfa claimed additional amount in respect of the additional costs incurred and the loss of profit due to the required change in working time and the claim was rejected by the High Court because it idnt satisfy the 5step test mainly it wasnt obvious and an implied term must be capable of clear and unambiguous expression. Reasonableness is also important where if an implied term would impose an arduous burden on one part, it is unlikely to be inferred. Price 2009). Lister v Romford Ice Storage Co (1957) AC 555 where a implied duty for reasonable skill and care was considered when a company was sued for the negligence of the employee, and it was determined that the employee was liable in damages to the employer for breach of contract, where an employee has a duty towards the employer to provide reasonable kill and care when driving the vehicle. Duty to obey orders An employee has a duty towards the employer to obey lawful and reasonable orders and in the case of Laws v London Chronicle Newspapers (1956) 1 WLR 698 Jean Laws was dismissed for disobeying an order to stay where you are and later was entitles to damages because her action didnt amount to willful disobedience. Adami v Maison De Luxe (1924) 35 CLR 143 is a case regarding the law full right to command. In this case Adami is a dance hall manager who was employed by Maison and when Adami was asked to work on Saturday afternoons he refused thinking that e was not bound by his contract to work at those times and Adami was dismissed for willfully disobeying an order. When the case was filed the court determined that employer had a lawful right to command Adami to work on Saturday afternoons and Maison was entitled to dismiss Adami.

I will identify the key aspects of current legislative requirements and codes of practice. I will include how information is gathered about the student and the importance of an Individual Educational Plan. I will examine the different types of assessment methods used and the importance of feedback. It will briefly go onto discuss the different types of records you would keep and why I considered record keeping to be important. I will identify how I implemented functional skills within my subject specialism. I will explain the importance of self reflection and how it enables you to improve your teaching practice. Roles, responsibilities and functions of a teacher The role and responsibilities of a teacher vary as is depends upon where and what you are going to teach. A teachers is not only to teach knowledge and skills to them, but to inspire them, be creative and finding ways to encourage learning. According to Marshall, B (2006). â€Å"Perhaps the most important is passing on what they know about a certain area or subject and ensuring that learners have enough practice and motivation to pass the ourse†. There are a number of roles and responsibilities that I need to carry out as this will help assist me to meet the needs of my learners effectively. These might include: ? Following professional values and ethics ? To create a safe learning environment ? Must possess subject knowledge. This shows the student that you are confident ? Give advice but keep it limited ? Must always ta ke a register ? Observe confidentiality ? Show patience ? Must possess classroom management skills ? Must track down students if they fail to attend lesson ? Make sure learning takes place Use safe equipment ? Diagnostic assessment ? Establish needs of the learner During my induction period at NTC I was provided with information about the college policies, current legislation and details about my roles and responsibilities. I have my own mentor that provides continuous help and support throughout my Teacher Training course. I tend to keep a record of what I teach I am going to teach and how my learners are progressing. I thought it was useful to set up a course file which contain all the documentation that is needed to deliver the course. This includes the syllabus, session plan, scheme of work, assignments handouts and activities. All the record of my learners are kept alphabetically so that I can easily access the learners information easily. I tend to keep certain information about my learners such as their application form, interview, Initial assessment, assessment records, action plan, tutorials, and review notes. I always make sure that I have some extra stationery hand as many of my students tend to forget to bring it with them. There are so many characteristics that make up an effective teacher. I always have additional worksheets prepared for my learners to carry out just in case the session finished earlier than expected. Teachers are addressed with many names such as assessor, coach, facilitator, counsellor mentor however it is necessary that I must work within my professional boundaries. It is about knowing where my role stops as a tutor. For instant make call to a learner to find out why they have not turned up, but continuously ringing the learner is not appropriate. I always make sure that I follow organisational requirements and policies. Below are some boundaries of a teacher: Your roles are limited to teaching pastoral care ? Cant undermine other colleague roles ? Not undermining departmental head ? If a criminal offence has been committed you must follow the legal process ? Making sure that you follow college policy e. g theft or assault Teachers are required by the college policy to attend staff meetings, attend standardisation meetings, take part in discipline p rocess and accurately mark a register and student homework. Most teachers tend to follow the training cycle. The training cycle identifies the learner’s needs and planning. Designing, facilitating and evaluating learning. However I always ensure that I follow through each point in order for teaching and learning to be effective. Identifying needs and planning – This is the stage where you find out the needs of the organisation and the learners. This stage prepares scheme of work and lesson plan taking into consideration the learning styles of each learner, the needs of the organisation, and the syllabus. Designing – Preparing a suitable environment, teaching strategies and resources Facilitating – Teaching and learning in a suitable manner Assessing – Ensuring that learners have met the learning outcomes and obtained knowledge and be able to apply this is practice Evaluation Obtaining feedback from my learners and evaluate so that I can make changes for improvemen Designing When designing the course I took into consideration the target audience so that there is no misconception of what the course entails. It also specified the time, duration and the entry requirements. I made sure that there is no sexual discrimination as the course was aimed at both male and females. There is also no age discrimination as all ages are welcome to join the course. I used a variety of colours, large fonts as this will have a visual impact as more individuals are likely to become aware of the course. The course takes place in the evening as this will give a chance for more learners to join as most individuals will have other commitments during the day such as going to work or looking after children. NTC offer child care facilities in order to attract those who are unable to attend due to not being able to afford child care costs. The course is absolutely free however identification is crucial as this must be bought in during the induction. You can bring in a passport, diving license as well as a bill. Induction When you begin teaching a new group it is very important to know certain points that I need to cover with them. This usually takes place during the induction process. This is a very important process. The induction usually gives an induction to the organisation and the course, I produce a checklist to ensure that I cover everything in the checklist and give learners a copy as this will give me them a framework of what is going to take place. During the induction I introduced myself to the class. I told them a bit about myself in terms of my educational history, where I’m from and my main aim which was to ensure that every learner within the class is learning effectively. I thought it was a good idea carry out an icebreaker as this will help the learners to get to know one another. This was an excellent team building exercise. I got my learners to introduce themselves in front of the class however this can be intimidating for some learners as they have no met any of the learners however most of my students were happy enough to undertake the activity. If I did encounter some problems I would group my learners into pairs and get them to chat to one another to discuss their hobbies and interests. The students really enjoyed this exercise as they got to know the similarities and the different experiences that learners have. The ice breaker helped me to retain attention, keep motivation high and help the group work together. An icebreaker also encourages the following: ? Encourages team work and inclusion ? Breaks down barriers ? Establish trust ? Create a friendly learning environment ? Builds confidence ? Helps reduce nerves Each of my learners had to fill in an application form as this will help me a brief idea about my learners. The application consisted of a section on their personal detail such as name, address, age, date of birth, place of birth. The next sections considered of previous qualifications and experience and a declaration. My learners undertook Initial/diagnostic assessment as this helped me to assess the level of literacy and numeracy skill the learner had. Some courses/qualifications have entry requirements. it also gives me an indication of aspects of work that they need to improve on. As a teacher I must make sure that I am not disadvantaging my learners by placing them on a course/qualification that they are not able to achieve. The initial assessment gave me information about the learner’s current level of ability as this will help me plan learning and assessment. I also conducted a one to one interview which involved asking a number of questions. I asked open ended questions and tried my level best to make my learners comfortable. During this process I got to know why my learner has enrolled on the course. This could be either internal or external. From this It also gave me a general idea on the learners motivation levels. I considered it useful to ask my learners their preferred learning styles as this will have to be taken into considered during the planning process. It gave a chance to identify whether they have any learning difficulties and needed any special adjustments. I thought it was necessary to ask whether they have other commitments and whether this would affect their attendance. Other commitment does tend to have an impact upon whether the learner is able to cope with the workload. It is very important for to know whether my learners have an health issues as my learners may need to need to leave the lesson to take the medicine as this will avoid disruption as I will be aware of why my learner wants to leave the room beforehand. I always ask my learners whether they have previous criminal conviction however I will not discriminate my learners on this basis as everyone must be given a second chance. I gave my learners a tour of the site so that they get familiar way with the building. I also gave them a handout on the facilities that we offer onsite. Such as parking areas, designated smoking areas, catering and toilet points within the organisation. I explained the health and safety procedures which explained the fire procedures, drill practices, and who to report to in an event of emergency. I must make sure that all my students fully understand the health and safety procedures therefore I performed a mini quiz with them which gave me satisfaction that they fully understood the procedures. I explained some details about the course such as the content of the course, learning outcome, how they will be assessed and important dates. We also agreed upon the lunch and break timing as learners need regular breaks to keep them motivated. All learners require ground rules. These are usually set by the organisation. Setting ground rules will help the learner to know their limits. Most learners have expectation from the teacher such as being organised, professional and facilitating learning in the best possible way. I always make sure that I start my sessions on time, write the aims and objectives on the board so that the learners know what is going to be delivered, recapping point and summarising at the end of the session. As a class we produced our ground rules which are the following: ? Mobile phones must be switched of or put on silent in order to avoid distracting the class. Anyone who needs to keep the phone on must inform the teacher as well as informing the group at the beginning of the session so that the call can be taken outside the class ? Must keep up to date with work- If student are not attending class they must make sure that they get the missed information from myself or other peers within the class ? All students must respect one another. Unacceptable behaviour is not acceptable. This can result in Work must be handed in on time. If work is not handed in on time it could lead to failure ? Must attend regularly In order to make sure that these ground rules are not forgotten I encouraged my students to design a poster that can be hung up on the wall so that my learners were aware of what is expected from them. You must allow students to decide upon the ground rules so that they can diffe rentiate between good and bad. It is also very useful to conduct a quiz or multi choice questionnaire that the can stick in their books so that they are constantly reminded of the code of conduct Identifying Learners Needs Scheme of Work A scheme of work is usually prepared i advance. The scheme of work takes into consideration the course requirements and is then broken down into small parts. The scheme of work usually consists of what you are going to cover in each lesson, the teaching activities that are going to be used, the timing for each learning activity in detail as well as the assessment activities. Whilst producing my scheme of work I take into consideration individual needs as well as special learning requirements. I also take into account WWWWWH. The scheme of work consists of the following: Who the lesson is for, the qualifications and the course title ? Location and duration of session ? Aims and objectives ? Activities, resources and assessment Lesson Plan There is a wide variation in regards to a teachers approach to lesson planning. Some teachers have detailed plans whilst others have little information on. Whilst planning a lesson plan there are a number of factors that influence you. A lesson plan consists of a set of aims and objectives in order to achieve the goals that have been set out by the syllabus. I tend to allocate time to the various objectives that have been set out. The aims and objectives covered within the lesson will follow on by assessment/examination. I tend to consider the SMART objectives so that I am able to examine my aims and objectives. I tend to start my lesson with aims and objectives so that the students are aware of what they are expected to know by the end of the lesson. I don’t expect too much of my learners as it will take time for my learners to assimilate new knowledge. I make sure that I book the venue beforehand and make sure that I have enough chairs and tables in order to accommodate the students. I will also check if the environment is appropriate for any special requirements. The venue can be a boundary and the best use of it must be the tutor’s responsibility. I tend to keep myself up to date with information relating to my subject area as well as my profession. I refer back to the National Qualification Curriculum Handbook so that I am able to set out activities based upon the learners ability. A boundary is that learners can expect the tutor to know everything. This is not possible. I must make sure that I have information and details on where information is available. Different aspect of diversity and inclusitivity were taken into account throughout the delivery of the lesson. Key Principle of Learning There are a number of theories that explore how people learn. These theories are dependent upon the thoughts and experiences. Individuals have their own way of learning and this can be influenced by their experience in their childhood, school, personal or professional relationships. These theories will assist me to understand my learners effectively. Laird (1985) introduced the sensory theory which suggests that by using the senses (sight, hearing, touching, smelling and taste) will enable you to remember learn effectively. Laird (1985) suggests that if multi senses are stimulated then greater learning is taking place. Laird quotes research that found that the vast majority of knowledge held by adults (75%) is learned through seeing. Hearing is the next most effective (about 13%) and the other senses touch, smell and taste account for 12% of what we know. By stimulating the senses, especially the visual sense, learning can be enhanced. I will make sure that I adopt a variety of teaching strategies and resources to allow my learners to use as many of their senses as possible. Experimental theory was is also a very useful theory based upon the process of how people understand their experiences, and as a result alter their behavior. This theory considers it to be beneficial for continuous reflection as this will gives an opportunity to modify our behavior. Kolb identified four distinct processes which identified methods of learning. Kolb (1984) produced a cycle of learning Experiential learning theory defines learning as the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. Knowledge results from the combination of grasping and transforming experience Kolb (1984). This theory emphasizes that without reflection we would continue to repeat our mistakes. [pic] The Two models (Concrete Experience) and (Abstract Conceptualization) are both related forms of grasping experience whilst the other two (Reflective Observation) (RO) and (Active Experimentation) are based upon transforming experience. Concrete Experience – This based upon the experiences of teaching. Reflecting upon – This is where I consider whether my lesson went well or not. If it didn’t go so well, what were the causes of it? At this stage I am critically judging myself. Planning Active Experimentation – At the final I will identify ways to solve the problem. If I were to conduct the lesson again how would I do it differently? What methods would I adopt and why? I always apply this theory to evaluate my teaching practice. In order for reflection to be effective I am always honest. I try not to blame my students in the process. I always take into consideration my learners learning styles as this will encourage learning. It is very important to identify my weaknesses so that I am able to address the issue and transform it to success. I get my mentor to continuously observe me as this helps me to get a more objective view of my teaching skills. Motivation There are types of motivation one is intrinsic which means the learners wants to learn or extrinsic meaning that there are taking part in learning due to external factors such as wanting to gain a promotion or gain citizenship. The motivation of the learner is mainly dependent upon the teacher. Therefore I must promote a professional relationship which will lead to individual learning and trust. Some learners may be already inspired to learning where other learners must be challenged, inspired and stimulated. There are many factors that affect a learner motivation to learn. In order to motivate my learner I will do the following: 1. Treat them with respect 2. Set clear targets 3. Create a friendly environment 4. Maintained organised and create challenging tasks 5. Make tasks interesting, practical and relevant 6. Use a variety of teaching strategies to reach all learning styles 7. Avoid competition 8. Be aware of their attention span 9. Give constructive feedback [pic] This is a theory of human motivation which has set up a hierarchy of five levels of basic needs which has been produced by Maslow (1954). The physiological needs are the basic survival needs, such as food, water and shelter (Petty 2001). If these needs are met i. e. the learners are well fed, are not thirsty and are neither too warm nor too cold, then the higher needs take their place (Petty 2001). It will be very difficult for a learner to remain motivated if they are hungry or thirsty or too warm. Room temperature is a big problem in some of the temporary buildings in which I teach, these buildings get far too warm in the summer and can be stifling in the winter. One of the first things I do when I arrive in one of these classrooms is to get the learners to open the windows so that the temperature falls and the room becomes less stuffy. Safety needs are concerned with physical and physiological safety (Gary2001). This means that the learners need to be in an environment where they do not feel anxiety or dread, and that the environment is stable (Petty 2001). Basically this means that the teacher should not use threats or punishment or any technique that would belittle or intimidate a learner. The teacher needs to establish the learning environment as one of trust. Social needs are concerned with the need to feel part of a social group (Gray et al 2001). If these needs are not met then the learner can feel lonely, and can feel hostility towards other members of the group. The esteem needs cover self esteem needs (desire for achievement, confidence and to be able to cope by oneself), and respect, where the learner desires recognition, status and dignity (Petty 2001). The self actualisation needs cover personal growth and development, self expression and the need to search for identity (Petty 2001). According to Petty (2001) if the first two needs are met then a teacher can harness Maslow’s needs by making sure that: All learners feel valued, accepted and included and that a group ethos is developed. There is also opportunity for group work · All students experience success, and get praise and other reinforcement. There are opportunities for learners to gain respect from the teacher and from the other learners · Routine tasks sometimes make way for choice, creative work and other opportunities for learners to express their individuality. The teacher gives opportunity for the learners to think for themselves and to satisfy their curiosity. Using these techniques will maintain a learner’s motivation, as will the use of praise and constructive criticism (Petty 2001). I always made sure that I kept Maslow Hierarchy into consideration as this will help me to create a positive learning environment. â€Å"Independent Learning is that learning in which the learner, in conjunction with relevant others, can make the decisions necessary to meet the learners own learning needs†. Kesten (1987). Successful independent learning depends upon internal and external factors. External factors involve the teacher and student relationship and the enabling learning environment. I noticed that independent learning is very beneficial as it motivated the learner as well as improving their management skills in terms of managing their learning. I always make sure that I encourage independent learning as I set out tasks where that require independent work. I deliver the Esol programme. I have about six students at different levels. I deliver a 4 hour lesson in the evening. My students tend to be very tired as the lesson takes place in the evening. I attempt to keep the students stimulated and motivated. It is my responsibility that the learner has a clear understanding of what the topic is, understand the learning objectives and how they will know if they have achieved the learning outcomes. Organisation is very important. It is necessary that to have the materials prepared beforehand, you must have enough handouts, a PowerPoint set up and extensive work set so that students are kept busy at all times. All the students must be learning. Teacher main objective is to facilitate learning. Reece ( 2002). Group Learning A group is a collection of individuals. Each individual will have their own personality. Taking part in group work can have an influence upon the learner’s behaviour. Group dynamics can change. For instance when a new learner joins the course late there can be personality clashes. In order to overcome this problem I will make sure that I make the learner feel welcome as well as pairing them with another learner as this encourage socialisation. I reinforce group work all the time and making sure that all my learners are taking part. Sometimes group work can get out of control therefore I must recognize the roles that various learners play as this will enable me to mix the learners into different groups. Groups of people go through stages when they meet. According to Tuckman (1965) group participants go through five stages: 1. Forming – This is the stage where learners get to know one another and I will make them aware of the boundaries and code of conduct. 2. Storming – This is where conflict arises as disagreements will take place 3. Norming – Learners exchange their ideas and group member get along with one another 4. Performing – Learners are confident at this stage to express their ideas and are enthusiastic to complete the task given 5. Adjourning – At this stage the task is successfully completed. Most learners went to keep in touch It is more than likely that most learner’s will complete five stages however there are some learners may not as they will move backwards and forwards in the process. It takes hard work and planning as groups take time to form and work together effectively. Learning Styles Honey and Mumford Questionnaire I also considered it vital to make sure that each learner completes a VAK questionnaire. Every learner has different styles of learning. So therefore as a teacher it was necessary that I referred some learning theories so that I could meet individual needs. Developing from Kolb’s work Honey and Mumford (1982) built a set of interventions which helps students and teachers to realise the diversity that exists in a group of people. They suggested that there are four styles Activist Theorist Pragmatist Reflector Active Processor ? Concrete perceivers absorb information through direct experiences by doing, acting, sensing and feeling. These individual have a preference for work placements, lab work. In other words they enjoy practical work rather than theory. To assist these learners a practical aspect will work more than additional examples. Abstract and reflective processors make sense of experience by immediately using the new information. These learners can be accommodated by making use of review question and the question and answer technique ? Reflective processors usually refer back to an experience. To assist these learners material must be given in advance. It is likely that these learner will perform at a low level withi n a practical task because the notes are not given in advance The VAK questionnaire gives me an idea of the style of learning that my students prefer. To avoid creating barriers for learning to take place I will make sure that I produce a scheme of work with a range of instruction methods to utilize all four learning styles. It is very important to assess learner styles so that they learn quickly and efficiently. Learners need to overcome a number of barriers to learn effectively such as social, physical, and organizational skills and to have a course that is open to many different types of learning styles as possible. An Individual Educational Plan is formed for each student so that we can accommodate the student’s needs. IEP is discussed later on in the essay. Domains of Learning ‘Blooms Taxonomy’ attempts to classify and form levels of learning. He suggests that learning goes through stages 1. Attention 2. Perception 3. Understanding 4. Short/long term memory 5. Change in behaviour Blooms (1956) states that this can affect thinking and actions. These are called domains: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. These are organised in a series of levels. One must not try to attempt to address higher level until the levels below are not completed. It provides a way of categorising learning. When planning learning I always make sure that I consider the domains that I want to reach. Facilitating Learning The subject that you will teach will extinguish the style of my delivery. This can formal, informal or a mixture of both. Formal delivery is in a form of a lecture, demonstration, and presentation. Informal teaching is more on the practical aspect as this will involve group work and practical activities. My subject is a mixture of both. I tend to conduct a demonstration before my learners can undertake the tasks or activities set out. I always remain confident when teaching. I try my level best to inspire my learners in order to maintain their interest. I am very passionate about my subject as this does reflect back upon the learners. I always remain professional because if I become too personal my learners will lose respect for me. My learners are attending the course for many different reasons. Some are voluntary and others may be attending for socialising rather than achieving a qualification therefore I must attempt to interest and motivate my learners so that they want to achieve. I do not show favouritism amongst my students as I always treat my students equally. I never lose my temper as this will show the learners that I am frustrated. This shows that the learners are taking control. I never make threats or touch my learners as this is unprofessional behaviour. I try to maintain a positive approach, be fair, friendly and organised. The main motivation is developed by making sure all my learners are learning and participating and making sure that I teach my subject in an interesting and challenging manner. Communication â€Å"Communication is a two way process, where you want to communicate to your students and you want your students to communicate with you†. Question and answer is a good way to develop this interactional style of communication. Reece (2003). In order to ensure that good communication takes place it is necessary to create an effective learning environment. To achieve this I need to make sure that there is trust between the tutor, learners and the institute. It is also method to recall information as well as and it assesses whether learning is taking place. Communication can take form in the m anner of expression such as body language, gestures, and voice. First impressions are considered to be very important. The learners tend to make a judgement during the first meeting as well as the teachers about their learners. However these judgements change over a period of time. Non verbal plays an important role in communication. I always make sure that I show good eye contact, always smile, I use the correct use of language, tone of voice, eye movement and other action that will result in a friendly Some gestures you may not realise such as hand movements. It is useful to have a video recording of my lesson so that I can identify my weaknesses. I make sure that whilst I write on the board or the flip chart I must not talk to my learners as this can be distracting for the learners to do two things at one time. It may also result in the learners not being able to hear me speak and miss out vital information. â€Å"Fault communication cause most problems†. â€Å"Effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that the sender intended to transmit†. Therefore I always make sure that I use the three P’s (Pitch-Pause-Pace). To ensure that the three P’s are effective. I must make sure that I speak clearly as this is the means to transmit clear information. I believe that in order to be an effective teacher it is necessary to communicate effectively. Without successful communication there is no learning taking place. I ensure that I adjust of my communication according to the standards of the class. . I always provide positive
